  4. QUESTION:
Will Light duty diesels save trucks and suvs?
Dodge has both a 4.2L V6 and a 5.6LV8 diesels for the Ram 1500 and Durango/Aspen, Ford has a 4.4L V8 for the F-150 and Expedition, and Gm has the Duramax 4.5L V8 for the Silverado/Sierra and Yukon/Tahoe. will these small diesels save the truck and suv market?

    • ANSWER:
You call these engines SMALL diesels. In Europe, engines of that size are fitted in 7.5 to 18 tonne rigids & used in delivery vehicles. ( 160 to 260 bhp) Here, “Small” Diesels are 1.4 litre & “large”- 3.5 litre! giving around 60 mpg & 35 mpg (imperial) Even so ALL diesels are more economical than their petrol (gasoline) equivalent, and if turbo / intercooled, more efficent than the naturally aspirated versions with lower emissions as well. As Diesels are naturally low revving, BHP isn’t going to be as high as before, BUT the low down “grunt” ( torque) will more than make up. The only thing against these engines will be the buying publics’ reluctance to change from the “big” V8s of old, but I feel they will follow “us” for a change and go for the Diesel alternative. Enjoy your choice whatever it may be. BUT NOTHING sounds better than a big V8 – except maybe a Harley with straight thru pipes.

  5. QUESTION:
    “light duty truck”?
if someone says a truck is “light duty” does that make it diesel?

also what is a gear splitter for?

    • ANSWER:
No, it does not mean it is diesel if it is light duty, though some light duty trucks are diesel. A light duty truck would be a F150, Ranger, Silverado, Sierra, Colorado, Canyon, Ram, Dakota or similar.

A splitter gear is used in manual transmissions for large commercial vehicles. For instance a 12 speed would be 4 gears with 2 splitters. You would shift 1 2 3 4, split the main splitter, shift back to 1 which will actually now be 5. The shift from 5 to 6 would be with the auxillary splitter. Then the aux is shifted back and you shift to 2 which is now 7.
