Master The Basics Of Diesel Engine Maintenance

Maintaining a diesel engine is more than changing oil and fuel and air filters. There are very common practices that you need to include in your diesel engine maintenance so to prolong its life.

For once, you need to mind some very important warm-up recommendations for your transmission and diesel engine. You have to allow a minimum of five minutes for your diesel engine to warm up before applying load. Without proper warm up, a diesel engine would prematurely wear out due to failures and seizures.

When you are operating a diesel engine in cold ambient temperatures, never forget to warm up its transmission oils, as cold temperature would increase oil viscosity. To avoid low hydraulic pressure and delayed oil circulation, you have to make sure you never forget to warm up.

Remember that you would only need a warm diesel engine and not one thats overheated. When diesel engine overheating happens, you have to remember the basics. First and foremost, you have to stop the diesel engine from operating and keep it idling without any load.

When you try to stop the diesel engine, dont do it suddenly. You have to let it run for around 5 minutes without any load before shutting it off. You have to allow the diesel engine to cool down and set it aside for about 30 minutes.

While the diesel engine is still running, never take off the radiator cap off or even just immediately after it has stopped. This will force out a very hot coolant from its radiator. You can only remove the radiator cap when it is cool enough that you can touch it with your bare hands. Take time to slowly loosen the cap to allow pressure to be releases before you totally remove it.

You then have to identify which repair needs to be done. Once identified, do the repair and fill in the radiator with the right amount of coolant antifreeze. You can use a hydrometer or ask any service shop to check it with a refractometer to properly check the concentration. Tighten the radiator cap securely.

You have to throw away unused coolant-antifreeze properly as it is poisonous to all living things, pets and humans. This is considered hazardous waste and if you do not have the proper facilities to dispose of this, you need to have it disposed by your hazardous waste service department.

Most importantly, remember that a diesel engine that overheats is a sign that it will be damaged beyond repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is buying a used diesel a good idea?
Ive found a few trucks for sale, but my dad isn't to keen towards them because they are diesel and thinks they would have problems. I know that its a chance with any used truck but is it a higher risk? (mileage ranges from 150k-250k mile)

    • ANSWER:
That is low milage for a diesel. If you pull regularly then it would be a great investment. Yes, they are less problem proned (for the pre-egr regulated engines), but when there is something wrong its gonna cost. I'd go with the 7.3 powerstroke or 5.9 cummins....NOTHING ELSE. I have a 96 F250 powerstroke with 580,000 miles and still going strong

  2. QUESTION:
any used suvs or pickup truck for sale?
im looking for an suv type or pickup truck for sale. used. i need it to haul around hockey equipment.im looking for pretty low mileage no preference on what type. looking in the price range from 00. Diesel is good too

    • ANSWER:
Hi, You can find suv's and pickups at car auctions really cheap. It sure wouldn't hurt anything to check one out. They have public car auctions in every state, so you probably wouldn't have to go too far to find one.

      Good Luck

  3. QUESTION:
Where do you sell used heavy duty diesel trucks that don't run.?
My dad drives a truck for a living and his truck stopped running yesterday. Not sure exactly what is wrong with it, and he doesn't have any money to fix it. He already had it for sale because he was planning to retire from his business anyway. Where could he post it for sale, with the expectation of the buyer having to pay cost of towing? I don't know make or model of the truck, but I'm sure that if he sold it at a good price someone could use it for parts or something if it costs too much to fix.

    • ANSWER:
www.craigslist.org Guaranteed you will sell if you go to craigslist. They even have a parts category if you just wanted to sell it that way.

What To Do When Youre In A Car Accident

Accidents can happen anytime, even if you are an extremely cautious and defensive driver! Most accidents actually occur within a 25 miles of the home, according to a Florida highway spokesman. Sometimes, they happen right in your own driveway. Just ask my sister-in-law who hit her friend’s car in her driveway while backing up! No matter where they occur there are a series of steps that should be followed after an accident.

The Consumer Protection Association of America continually develops a list of recommendations for drivers so that they’ll actually know what they need when a traffic accident occurs. This fine organization takes major steps to increase public awareness regarding traffic safety. Some of the steps are preventative and should be followed now before you’re involved in an accident.

One, have an emergency kit in your glove compartment or storage area. The kit should include a cell phone, pen, pad of paper, and a disposable camera (this is very important). With today most of us carry a cell phone, which takes pictures. As long as you insure that your cell phone is with you and carries a charge this should suffice for the cell phone and disposable camera in the kit. These items are for recording the key information regarding the accident and the scene. You should also have a card with information concerning any medical allergies or conditions you have that require special attention, as well as emergency contact information. It is also recommended by other agencies that you have a number list ed on your cell phone under ICE (in case of emergency), where the attending policeman or EMT can simply hit speed dial on your cell phone to reach your emergency contact. You should also have traffic cones, warning triangles and emergency flares in your trunk.

Two, you need to insure that safety is first! When you are involved in a minor accident and there are no serious injuries, make sure that the vehicles are moved to the side of the road. Do not stay on the road and become an obstacle to oncoming traffic. If you do this, it may result in the occurrence of more and more serious traffic accidents because of your vehicles creating an obstruction in the road. My wife was rear-ended by another woman on an exit ramp and they both left their vehicles on the ramp believing it to be safe and that it was important for the police to see the exact position of the vehicles. In spite of the fact that both vehicles were clearly visible for a minimum of 300 yards and they both had their flashers on, another drive came up and rear-ended the SUV that had originally struck my wife! My wife called me on the cell phone and told me what was going on and I told her to get those vehicles off of the road right away! If the car or cars is not movable, make sure that the other motorists are warned by turning on the hazard lights and setting out flares, traffic cones or orange triangles to divert traffic. If you cannot move the vehicle, do what you can to alert the traffic and then move away a safe distance in case of any further accidents.

When you are involved in an accident with serious injuries make sure that no one is in immediate danger (from fires, falling tress or telephone poles, etc). After you have made sure of this, attend to those hurt. It is important that you not move anyone that has been seriously injured unless they are in immediate danger. Further injury can occur from movement. It is always a good idea to let the emergency response teams attend to and moved the injured whenever possible to help prevent this.

Three, exchange all of the important information with the parties involved. You’ll need to obtain the other driver’s name, addresses, phone numbers (home and work), insurance company, car insurance policy number, driver’s license number, license’s plate number, and make sure to write down a description of each car, the year, make, model, color and any apparent damage. Also, write down what occurred during the accident as soon as possible. Pay special attention to the position of the vehicles, sequence of events and the cause of the damage.

I recommend that you write down all information readily available to you without the cooperation of the other driver such as the license plate number, make, model and color of the car, driver description and brief description of other occupants. Also, obtain any witness information at this time. As long as no one is hurt, most witnesses will soon depart the accident scene, and you want to make sure that you have their information. After obtaining this info, then approach the driver about their information like driver’s license number, insurance information and contact information. This makes sure that the other driver cannot bolt from the scene while you are distracted without obtaining information and it lets them know that you are all business.

Four, take photos of the accident scene and the cars involved. Use your disposable camera or cell phone to document the damage to all the vehicles and the scene of the accident. If there are important points to demonstrate such as long skid marks, hidden entrance/exit, etc. make sure to document these as well. Make sure that the vehicle photos illustrate the total context of the accident so that they will back up your claims. If there are witnesses, make sure to ask them for their name and phone number, and ask if they’ll help you in case of problems with the other driver disputing what actually happened.

Five, file an accident report as soon as possible and obtain a copy of it as soon as it is made available. In some areas law enforcement officials do not respond to traffic accidents unless injuries are present. You should always call the police and request that an officer come to the scene to right up the police report. They will obtain the information from the other drive, if they are uncooperative with sharing the information with you, and they will write down their observations of the scene of the accident, which will further support your claims. If you cannot get a policeman to the scene where your accident occurs, find out how you go about filing an accident report and do so right away. You may have to go to the local police station or you may be able to download accident report forms on-line depending on your locale. A police report usually helps speed up the claims process.

Six, understand your insurance coverage before an accident. The more you know about your insurance coverage the easier the claims process and procedure will go. Does your policy cover towing or a replacement rental car fee? If yours does not and the accident was the other driver’s fault immediately make a claim for this with their insurance company.

The question everyone is typically concerned with is “Who is going to pay for this?” If it is the other driver’s fault you should insist that they pay for the damage. If they agree, get them to acknowledge this in writing if possible. The other drive may be agreeable to pay for the damage now, but after a little time goes by and they are not in your immediate presence they may have a change of heart and decide to try and stiff you (this is why you need witnesses, documentation, etc.).

I recommend calling someone if available to assist you in the accident management process. They will be much calmer and more objective in seeing that everything is carried out. I arrived prior to the police at my wife’s previously mentioned accident when our van was rear-ended. I checked and made sure that everyone was okay. Then I made sure that the vehicles were a safe distance from the road. Next, I obtained all of the vehicle information (make, model, color, license plate number), photographed the vehicles and the accident scene. I then obtained the driver information from the other two drivers involved. After I obtained the car insurance information, I immediately contacted the other driver’s car insurance company and had them open a claim for the damage that had been done to our van. I did all of this before the policeman completed writing his report. I then talked to the police officer and obtained his name and learned the content of his report. When I determined that I was satisfied the content accurately portrayed what my wife indicated had happened, I asked him for the report number so I could obtain a copy as soon as possible. My doing this streamlined the whole process for our claim and it moved through like clockwork.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    vehicle photos?
can any one tell me the sites where i can download huge collections of high quality car photos..
i want to download all photos at the press of a button

    • ANSWER:
try google images . Then the site which the car is on will have more stuff. good luck.

  2. QUESTION:
Looking for vehicle photos arranged by year, make and model?
I'd like to find a website that shows pictures in this way for comparison purposes. For example, whats the difference between a Lincoln Aviator and a Lincoln Navigator? Which one is similar to the Ford Excursion? What year did a certain make/model start using these rediculous plastic "bumpers" that you can do 00 damage to with a hard kick? Stuff like that.

    • ANSWER:
The Aviator is Lincoln's version of the Ford Explorer, a mid-size, while the Navigator is to the Expedition, as far as the Excursions, nothing is like it, it's base off a 1 ton chassis. They canceled production of the X, and replaced it with the Expedition EL, but it's now where near the duty of the X's.

As far as expenses, I can't say, but between buying the skin, painting it, and installation, maybe half that, but I have no idea to be honest. Hitting a deer, replacing the front bumper, valence, and grill, and repainting the hood (just stress cracked), was 00. The grill assembly was somewhere at 0.

Looking for a family vehicle that could tow, the Explorer was way to small and weak, the Expedition still wasn't big enough, but could pull some, the X fit the bill, holding 8, having cargo room too, and pulling over 10,000 lbs, that's where I went.

Here's a few links for you...

  3. QUESTION:
When advertising a car for sale how do I blank out the vehicle registration mark from the photos?
Before placing an advert on the internet ebay etc?

    • ANSWER:
Photoshop or any good photo editing program will allow that.

  4. QUESTION:
How is a vehicle photo inspection done?
I recently bought comprehensive insurance for my car with Allstate. They sent me a letter saying that I have to have my vehicle photo inspected. They didn't provide specific details about where or how this is done, so I'm asking you guys. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
I'm assuming you mean that they want you to do a pre-inspection, such as in the state of Massachusetts? If this is it, you go to a registered inspection station and they take a photo of the VIN tag and 2 photos. One photo is an angle shot of the front of the vehicle and one side. The other photo is an angle shot of the back of the car and the other side.

If you don't do this as they require, they can cancel your coverage for non-compliance.

  5. QUESTION:
    stock vehicle photos?
There a place online where I can get stock photos of vehicles? I'm making a brochure for a car auction and I need one large image of one of the models on the front cover. They gave me photos to place next to the listings, but they suck and are extremely small. Are there any places online where I can find hires photos of vehicles? Like If I wanted to use a Ford F150, There should be a place where I can download hires photos available specifically for ad purposes, right? Car dealers use hires photos of F150s all the time, did they necessarily get them sent to them by Ford did they? Thanks.

PS: and yes I've tried stock xchange, morguefile, and all those other sites, plz dont post those.

    • ANSWER:
Try http://www.photo-wizard.net its smaller but may have what you need.

Here are some other places you can find some inexpensive stock photo directories:

Diesel Performance- Miracle Or Snake Oil

There are so many products out there that seem to be just too good to be true and there are too many people out there that are more than willing to take advantage of another’s lack of knowledge. There are also sooo many out there that are willing to play on peoples emotions, you know, the whole “you can have amazing results for practically nothing, and for only minutes a day at no cost to you”. We’ve all heard it before. So what makes diesel performance products, like a chip, or a cold air intake, or an exhaust any different. You might ask yourself, can adding something that small to my vehicle produce as great results as so many people tell me they do? Or will these items really pay for themselves in the form of added fuel economy, and reduced wear and tear on my vehicle? It is these questions about these products that I am going to address, and at the same time educate, because knowledge is power my friends.

If you were to modify a gas engine for performance, you would be required to install a different camshaft, bore out the cylinders to increase displacement, install high compression pistons and heads, increase fuel intake capability by installing a larger carburetor or injection system, adding a turbo charger or supercharger, adding a chip, and enlarging the exhaust system. But then you are still restricted by emission control systems. On the other hand, diesel trucks and cars are mostly turbo charged, and they already run at a higher compression ratio. Whereas on the gas vehicles you would have to make those changes. If you were to make those changes to a gas engine you would truly have a ground pounding beast, but would lose every day drive ability. The Diesels on the other hand are nice to drive around even with considerable modification. With a cold air intake, a chip, more efficient injectors, and a more open exhaust system, the diesels are still a nice ride, but when you really give it the gas, all heck breaks loose. There is enormous power without reducing drive ability.

Because of the nature of diesel engines they are designed from the factory to withstand much higher compression ratios than a gas engine. The diesel fuel combusts when it is compressed to a certain point whether or not there is optimum air. By simply shooting more fuel into the combustion chamber you can make more power. When you then improve the air ratio & timing of the fuel - you can make dramatic power and also improve engine efficiency. Gasoline requires a spark to ignite it & must have the appropriate mixture of air to burn properly. There is also a lot more energy in a given amount of diesel fuel than in an equal amount of gasoline.

I will now break down the most popular modifications and explain their benefits.

1. A cold air intake is sealed away from the hot engine air, and is located where it can take in more air. Cold air intakes are equipped with a filter that can take in up to 300% more air. Cold air takes up less space. So there can be more air, more air helps to burn all the fuel, thus giving more power
and better fuel economy.

2. Chips make alterations to how the fuel is delivered to the engine, making it more efficient and more powerful.

3. A bigger exhaust or a mandrel bent exhaust (keeps the tube round, and the size constant) improves exhaust flow. Getting exhaust away from the engine is just as important in combustion as getting air into the engine. There are exhausts now that will even vacuum exhaust away from the engine, making it so that the engine doesn’t have to do that work.

All of these modifications add to the fuel economy of the diesel engine, and will over time actually pay for themselves in gas savings, and will continue for years after they are paid for to keep your money in your pocket.

Diesels are the wave of the future and more and more economy vehicles are being produced in diesel versions because they are capable of so much better economy.

How can I get my 2003 F350 Super duty 6litre power stroke diesel to idle up when in park?

    • ANSWER:
first of all why do you want to, but there are several ways the first is on the pcm connector there is a single pink wire if you put it on a switch to power it will take the idle up to 1100 the second is from millar industries best known for the tow trucks they have a wire in box that does it. if conditions are not meet though even if the truck does it automatically it will only take it to 850, any questions just ask

  3. QUESTION:
I have a 1999 f-250 with a 7.3 liter power stroke diesel and when i start it in the morning it will die?
several times unless i let it warm up for at least 20 minutes. when it dies it almost drains my batteries to get it started again, but then it runs fine the rest of the day. I have changed my fuel filter cleaned my tank and the fuel pump stays running when it dies. what else can I do to stop it from dieing on me.the other day when it died it would not start back up and the day after it started just fine

    • ANSWER:
What are the ambient temperatures in your area? If it's within the 32 degree or less range, I would verify all glow plugs are working. Under the hood, there are TWO relays on top of the engine. One is your manifold air heater relay. The other is the glow plug relay. One of the terminals is your B+ terminal. The other, is the power supply to your glow plugs. One will be an eyelet with yellow wire to supply power to one bank of cylinders. The other is an eyelet with a brown wire supplying power to the other bank. If these circuits are good, you've pretty well eliminated the glow plug system as the cause. Make sure to check this when the engine is cold while someone cycles the key to the RUN position. The glow plug "on time" ("wait to start" light on) will depend on the ambient temperature. Also change your oil to 10W30 DIESEL rated engine oil (if ambient temperature is at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit). Be sure to fill it up with 14.2 liters (15 quarts) with the oil filter change to ensure proper level. Low engine oil level will starve the high pressure oil circuit, and in turn, cause a hard start/no start symptom. Does the engine run like it misses when cold? If so, you could have sticking injector(s). The only way to verify this is to take it to a Ford dealer and request to have an IDS "injector buzz test" as well as a key-on-engine-off/running tests to check for codes. This is assuming you have clean fuel and air filters, as well as good fuel. You should also speak with the servicing tech to verify good ICP and IPR readings during hot and cold soaks to ensure that that's not the cause of your symptom. Well, hopefully I've passed on some useful information that will benefit you.

  4. QUESTION:
i have a ford 550 super duty 6.0 power stroke diesel start and run for ten min and shutoff and wont start?

    • ANSWER:
If the fuel pump stops running, might be the relay overheating. I had a 351 do that, relay was bad. The pump lives in the tank

  5. QUESTION:
changing a fuel filter on a F-350 Power stroke 7.3L Diesel?
I have a question. I need to change the fuel filter in a 97 F-350 7.3L Power stroke Diesel. Do i need to bleed the fuel system out after i change the filter? Or is it the same as changing one of a gas system where you just take the old one out and put a new one in and that is it. Thanks!!!! Any pointers?? Please do tell.

    • ANSWER:
On top of the fuel filter canister there will be a threaded plug. You need to take this out then turn your key on and wait till fuel fills the canister. This takes the air out. Just turning your key on won't do it and it will vapor lock if you don't get it bled. Easier if you have help so you can monitor the fuel at the top of your canister.

To prove our theory, we decided to look at available Sport Utility Vehicles that can hold their own against other top-selling SUVs, but can also be as easy on your finances as the payment for a mid-size car.

First, let's consider what you should look for in a Midsize SUV. Most people prefer SUVs for cars for two reasons: more cargo space and better safety features. If you're looking for an SUV at any price, you should make sure it meets your needs. Cargo space first. An SUV should provide you with enough space to haul the type of cargo you typically need to take with you, as well as seat the correct number of passengers. This is the reason, in and of itself, many people decide on a Midsize SUV over a Compact SUV. If it doesn't meet your needs, it's not a good value at any price.

Second, safety is important. An affordable SUV doesn't mean that you should compromise on basic safety features. After all, what's going to be more important in an accident leather seats or well-designed airbags? Make sure your SUV offers what you need. Need a 2-wheel drive vehicle? Get one. Do you deal with snowy conditions several months out of the year? If so, then you're better suited for a 4-wheel drive SUV. Do yourself a favor and get a 4-wheel drive. If you don't, you're sure to regret scrimping on the features that make handling the vehicle easier and safer.

So what are the options? We found three dependable Midsize SUVs that start at under ,000. Each has impressive features, but we found the one we thought was the best value.

Dodge Nitro. A four-door wagon style SUV with a base price starting at ,225. Although it's smaller than the other two, its boxy design gives it a bit more accessible cargo space and seats four adults comfortably. The Nitro's body style is trendy but functional the scaled down exterior dimensions makes negotiating traffic and getting in and out of tight spaces easier than many compact SUVs.

Kia Sorrento. A four-door wagon style SUV with a base price starting at ,995. Available with an impressive amount of features even on the base model, the Sorrento is more enjoyable to look at than to drive. On bumpy roads, the ride and handling can be frustrating and the resale value is nothing to write home about. The warranty, however, is generous meaning Kia stands by the quality of the parts they use. Always a plus.

Isuzu Ascender 5-Passenger. Our favorite Midsize SUV choice with a base price starting at ,459. With room for five adult passengers and impressive amount of cargo space, you'll feel like you're driving a full-size SUV. Several standard features are worth mentioning: the hydraulically assisted rack-and-pinion power steering system, the anti-lock brake and traction control systems, and its efficient inline 6-cylinder engine. And of course, it comes with Isuzu's famous warranty: 7-year/75,000 Mile Powertrain Limited Warranty and Isuzu's 7-year/75,000 Mile Roadside Assistance Program. Nice.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Best Diesel Pickup Truck?
I am really looking for a disel full size pickup. not for towing but like hauling materials such as construction. i want diesel motor to save me some money. the truck must be 4x4, 08-2010, 8ft bed, extended or crew cab/mega, lastly if its used, the price should be no more than 30,000 dollars and no more than 30k miles. any suggestions????

    • ANSWER:
A F-250 Super Duty FX4 will take care of your needs and
do it in style without all the glitches and problems that seem
      to plague the Duramax.

  2. QUESTION:
Dodge Ram is the best pickup truck on the market - Who agrees?
The 2009/2010 Dodge Ram 1500 has the best ride, best handling, best interior, and the awesome HEMI engine. The Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 have the awesome Cummins Diesel engine. Also the Dodge Rams have the best exterior look.

Dodge Rams are superior to any other pickup trucks out there.

Fords and Chevrolet are more popular only because they are cheaper and more people can afford them. Dodge Rams are more high-end and higher quality than Fords and Chevrolets.

    Who agrees?

    • ANSWER:
I've used the Dodge Ram for a work truck. It was a great truck. If I were in the market for one, I'd probably buy one for myself.

I do like the look of the Toyota Tundra however. Never drove one, but that would be the other truck I would check out.

I own three Chrysler/Dodge Vans now. One Grand Caravan and two Town & Country vans. We had a Concorde before that and I've had a Dodge truck years ago. The Grand Caravan has 200,000 miles, one T&C has 110,000, the Concorde had 160,000 and NEVER a mechanical problem with any one of them. (Brakes, exhaust, tires and the like of course.) I find Chrysler products are solid from my experience.

  3. QUESTION:
    Toyota Tundra or Ford F150 4.6 V8?
I'm looking into a 2WD 2008-2010 4.6/4.7 V8 Regular cab F150 or Tundra. I've narrowed down my choices and it's come down to those two and nothing else. I've driven both 2010 4.6 models with 6 speed automatics and both have pretty good performance considering the 4.6.

I want the 4.6 because my hauling demands aren't too big, and I know each tank fill up will be like 80 bucks since I have to use this as a commuting truck for my job. I'd get a 250/2500 series DIESEL crew cab if money was no issue and if I had bigger hauling demands, but diesel in this area is very scarce for some reason. Not to mention repairs for diesel engines are totally wack when it comes to the cost....even though they do perform better. I enjoy my V6 4X4 Frontier, but I have to get bigger for other purposes.

Everyone I know who has had an F150 has had many problems with it and they have been known to be unreliable. Cheapest full size truck to buy in America, makes sense...right? Although, after comparison to maintenance, insurance, and parts availability, the F150 has been known to be cheaper to run and maintain.

The Tundra on the other hand is questionable when it comes to reliability. I don't know too many people who have a Tundra, let alone a 4.6 tundra and the online reviews weren't as widely available either. Parts and insurance was a little bit higher then the F150, but Toyota has been known as a solid, reliable brand.

Both offer the same amount of cargo space, cabin space, and great features. So I can't really decide.
Which one will be the best for reliability, performance, and best gas mileage (Yes, I'm aware it's a full size truck and not a compact car, so I know the gas mileage and fill up won't be easy on the wallet)

  4. QUESTION:
Toyota Tundra or Ford F150 V6?
'm looking into a 2WD 2008-2010 V6 Regular cab F150 or Tundra. I've narrowed down my choices and it's come down to those two and nothing else. I've driven both 2010 4.6 models with 6 speed automatics and both have pretty good performance considering the 4.6.

Parts and insurance was a little bit higher then the F150, but Toyota has been known as a solid, reliable brand.

I know the V6 Tundra comes standard with a 5 speed or even 6 speed automatic when the F150 has the V6 still at a 4 speed automatic. I will be using this to commute in and rarely have to haul anything. Is the V6 worth it? Will the gas mileage really be in the middle 20's with cruise control on like everyone says it can do with the V6? And power...would a V6 with a 5 speed automatic take up more gas and struggle?

Both offer the same amount of cargo space, cabin space, and great features. So I can't really decide.
Which one will be the best for reliability, performance, and best gas mileage (Yes, I'm aware it's a full size truck and not a compact car, so I know the gas mileage and fill up won't be easy on the wallet)

    • ANSWER:
I have tundras for years every time I buy a new one I like it better. I get at least 150,000 to 200,000 miles out of it before I sell it. I have all the work done at the dealer when it needs it. Fuel mileage on my 010 is in the mid 20s if I keep the speed under 80and use the cruse.

Diesel Air Intakes To Improve Performance

Like most diesel truck owners, you are probably always looking to improve your diesel performance. Luckily, there are many tools at your disposal to help make your truck run more efficiently as well as more powerfully. Whether youve been making performance modifications to your vehicle for some time, or youve just started, a quality intake is probably something youve been thinking of incorporating into your diesel performance plan.

Quadzilla

Quadzilla intakes are one of the most popular, and when you see green, you know are you are looking at a Quadzilla intake as they use green exclusively. All Quadzilla intakes are built from steel and are powder-coated wrinkle black. Quadzilla is considered superior to other brands for a variety of reasons including the green woven cotton that wears better, and has better filtering capabilities. Quadzilla also uses just two layers, instead of up to seven, which obviously allows more airflow. With Quadzilla you can see up to 35 horsepower gains, which is quite remarkable.

AFE Trueflow

AFE Trueflow is another diesel air intake that you might want to look into. If you are tired of changing your paper air filter, AFE Trueflow might be just what you are looking for. This air intake filter involves five cotton gauze layers and two non-woven synthetic layers. With the AFE Trueflow youll benefit from high filtration and a long service life. The AFE Trueflow has been specifically designed for your Chevy Duramax, Dodge Cummins, or Ford Powerstroke that is operating under heavy-duty work conditions. This is definitely a great buy, and a brand you can believe in.

Of course, when you mention diesel intakes, the Banks brand is one that fits right in. Banks has developed a series of intakes that will allow your engine to maximize efficiency by balancing the air and fuel ratio leading to safe engine temperatures, engine durability, fuel efficiency, and powerful performance every time. Banks has a theme of First Air, Then Fuel and this carries over to their intakes, which will enhance your performance every time. When you match their intakes with power chips, youll find that you have a great combination to work with!

Bully Dog

Bully dog is another of the obvious choices for a diesel performance air intake solution. Bully dog cold air intakes deliver more oxygen for more power, in every truck, every time. While Bully dog is known for just about every thing diesel and even Bully dog propane, its a brand that you can really trust and comes through every time. If you want more horsepower, a Bully dog air intake is what you need to get the job done. Even better, Bully dog has consistent prices so that you can improve your diesel performance as cost effectively as possible.

Diesel performance is definitely affected by air intake, so if you havent already, you should consider the intakes above to work with your diesel tuners, diesel chips, and even your diesel exhaust to improve your performance even more! Youll be amazed at what the right air intake can do for your truck.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
is home heating oil the same as diesel fuel? the red colored diesel used in cars and trucks?
is it ok to burn diesel in my furnace?

    • ANSWER:
Some of the people answering this question don't know anything about diesel fuel and home heating fuel !!! To answer your question red colored diesel fuel is for off road use[farm tractors and other machines off road] Home heating oil is also dyed red as well Kerosene. On road diesel and off road diesel as well as home heating oil all used to be the same thing. Now in many states on road diesel has had most of the sulfur removed. This does not change the way it burns in a diesel engine or a furnace.Any home heating oil fired unit can burn on road, off road or Kerosene with no problems and with out having to change anything and IDIOTS that tell you it can not be done do not know what they are talking about. I see I must have touched a nerve with one of the Idiots and got a thunbs down!

  2. QUESTION:
Why Are Diesel Engines Used In Semi Trucks Instead of Gas?
I remember in the early 80's some car makers coming out with diesel engines in passenger cars.
Nobody liked them. My grandparents hated their diesel powered Cadillac and couldn't wait to get rid of it.
So if diesel is so lousy in cars, why is it preferred in semis and heavy duty trucks for that matter?
I understand the basics. Gas explodes and diesel burns. But what is the advantages and disadvantages?

    • ANSWER:
Diesel is NOT lousy for cars. Blame Detroit for NOT developing diesel engines or importing nice ones. In Europe you can get a WIDE VARIETY of cars with diesel engine. Benz makes a 500 series sedan with turbodiesel... 450 HP, 650 ft/lb torque! VW have lots of diesel cars over there too. However, due to the old views of your parent's generation, diesel in the US has got a stigma that it has yet to recover from.

Why trucks have diesel engines? A few reasons: 1) better fuel economy. Diesel contains more energy per volume than gasoline. The way diesel works is compress the fuel/air mixture until it goes boom. By definition it's a high-compression engine, and with help of turbocharger (on most diesels, making it a turbo diesel) it makes plenty of hp for most needs. 2) less maintainence. To handle higher compression, diesel engines are heavier duty overall, have a lot less parts (no ignition system at all!) and less plumbing and 3) diesel engine is opposite of gas engines that it generates more torque than horsepower, which is needed to get heavy loads started.

It is true that diesels are noisier, and generates more "soot", but a) that's due to older design, and b) that's due to sulfur in the fuel. Newest engines like CAT w/ ACERT technology are extremely clean compared to engines of 5 or 10 years ago. .

EDIT: Doug B's right, diesels do have catalytic converters, but they serve somewhat different purpose than the cats for gas engines. For gas engines, the cat is used to convert unburned hydrocarbons to forms that won't get turned into acid rain and such. For diesel engines, the cat is mainly there to deal with soot and sulfur. Both cats deal with Nitric Oxides and Carbon Monoxide. So they would have slightly different formulation. Both types of cats are expensive though.

'm looking into a 2WD 2008-2010 V6 Regular cab F150 or Tundra. I've narrowed down my choices and it's come down to those two and nothing else. I've driven both 2010 4.6 models with 6 speed automatics and both have pretty good performance considering the 4.6.

I want the V6 models because my hauling demands aren't too big, and I know each tank fill up will be like 80 bucks since I have to use this as a commuting truck for my job.

I don't know too many people who have a Tundra, let alone a V6 tundra and the online reviews weren't as widely available either.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Ford Ranger is being discontinued in 2012?
I heard that Ford will be discontinuing the Ranger after 2012. What will be replacing it? I heard it'll be replaced by another compact truck, but I think it would we smart to have a diesel compact truck. Does anyone know anything about the replacement truck?

    • ANSWER:
Ford initially considered two new, smaller-than-F-150 pickup trucks, one based on the F-Series (following the older F-100 offering) and the other a replacement for the current Ranger compact, which is unchanged, save for facelifts, since the 1998 model year. The F-100 has since been tabled, in favor of offering an EcoBoost engine in the F-150 product line.

The Ranger replacement, codenamed T6, is being designed and developed by Ford Australia and was originally intended only for world markets other than the U.S. However, T6 engineering prototypes are being tested in the U.S. This new Ranger will be launched in 2012 and will be similar to the new international version. It is reported that the new truck will come with two engine choices: a 1.6 L EcoBoost four-cylinder, and the 3.0 L Duratorq diesel for models sold outside the U.S

  2. QUESTION:
Would it be stupid to buy either a 2011 leftover or new 2012 F250 diesel for a daily driver?
My 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche motor blew up on Friday night on my way home from work. It only had 108,000 miles on it. I talked to my mechanic and he told me that it was going to cost between 00- 00 to rebuild or around 00- 00 for new engine. It makes me mad that I bought this truck new and it blew up on me.
I have to make a decision on what to do I think I am better off just buying a new truck and I like the ford my first car was a ford a 1990 Taurus that I sold in 04 because I bought the Avalanche. I bought a truck because I got into fishing and used it to tow my boat and I recently got into snowmobiling last winter and I used it to tow my sled and I have used it for the occasional landscaping job around my house.

I thinking of going diesel because I have a fifty five mile commute to work daily and I average about 16,500 miles a year and figured I can get somewhere between 225-300 thousand miles out of a diesel and i herd the new ones get around 17mpg and my avalanche only got 14mpg so with difference in fuel prices should even out.

I really don't known what to do. I am open to any suggestions or opinions I just need to get my own car either fixed or another one. i am currently driving my dad's slider/ summer car 97 Thunderbird and that will not run well this winter lol

    • ANSWER:
If your Avalance blew an engine @ 108K miles, there is something wrong.
You had to have neglected something because engines like that don't just blow for no reason, all of the sudden.

I would look @ a 2011 Silverado extended or crew cab 4X4 with the 5.3L engine.
Chevy is discounting these 8K-8500 off sticker and if you can find one with the 3.08 ratio/6 speed automatic, you can get up to 21 mpg on the highway.

As mentioned, diesel fuel is going to kill you every winter. It's 80 cents more per gallon and you aren't getting better fuel economy.
Sure diesel engines last longer, but there's also the potential for more maintenance.

  3. QUESTION:
who out there is driving bio diesel fueled cars and trucks?
thinking of a newer car very soon, but gas prices on the rise, and supposed to go near .00 a gallon in 2012, ok so, thinking of using the vegetable oil from my brothers restraunt to fuel a diesel engine. looking at this web site. http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_svo.html#Elsbett ok so i dunno much about these things.. is any one out there doing this ? i know there are, just wanna hear from like minded folks. maybe i dunno should i be thinking electric?

    • ANSWER:
Hi! I've done many essays and speeches on electric cars, and will answer that if you wish to get away from fuel, electric is the alternative. Already, the Toyota 'Leaf' has hit the market and many companies are investing money into 100% electric cars. Also, January 2012, I believe Chevy is unveiling their own 100% electric car, which is going to be targeted towards the average person, and a little more spacious than Toyota's 'Leaf.'
I definitely think you should take a look at the link below, as it has helped me gain an understanding about ALL alternative fuel options. Also, if you really want to understand it more, the documentary "Who killed the electric car." by Sony, has struck the world. I think you should take a look at the link, http://www.sonyclassics.com/whokilledtheelectriccar/
      Hope this helps!

P.S Iron-pla..: they're developing newer and better cars with electric and alternate fuel, so you cannot possibly anticipate the recharge time or efficiency of the vehicles a few months from now. Your experience may be valid but those experiences may have been induced by shoddy modeled cars. icon smile 2012 Diesel Trucks

  4. QUESTION:
2012 Jeep Liberty poor gas mileage and high RPMs?
Just purchase a 2012 Jeep Liberty sport 6cyl, 3.7liter and its getting horrible gas mileage. Its also driving at high RPMs. I'm averaging a combined 13MPG, and while driving city at aprox 40mph my Jeep stays at about 2 RPM's. When I'm on the highway for example and I give it gas to pass a car my RPMs jump to roughly 3.5-4, and sounds like a diesel truck. I've took my it in to the dealership 1 week after I purchased it complaining about the poor fuel economy. Diagnostics were ran and they blamed in on the engine break-in period and the extra ethanol added in the winter. I purchased this vehicle with expectations of 15-17mpg city and 20-22 highway. I would have purchased a Ford Escape if I knew that it was going to be like this. I am a new Jeep owner and I might just be unfamiliar with the brand. Please help and let me know if this sounds like problem.

    • ANSWER:
Two things have occurred to me. I have a 2006 Liberty Limited, 3.7 V6, 4x4, 3 speed automatic with overdrive. At 65 mph my tach gives dead on 2000 rpms when the overdrive is engaged; with the overdrive disengaged and my tach reading 2000 rpms and the speed is about 45 mph. My mileage is typically in the 18-20 mpg range. That makes me wonder if your overdrive is not working. There is a button on the left side of the shifter that engages and disengages the overdrive, when the overdrive is disengaged there is a O/D OFF light that lights on the left side instrument panel. Assuming your Liberty has the overdrive transmission try pushing the button while driving and watch your tach. Thought #2 is does your Liberty have any type on trailer towing package or was an optional differential listed on the invoice. A lower gear ratio in the differential would cause a drop in mileage as well as causing the engine to rev higher at any speed. Just a couple of ideas. And engine break-in periods is a thing of the past.

  5. QUESTION:
Is buying a diesel engine a better choice?
Im ready to buy another car and it seems that jeep will release a new truck for 2012, with a 2.8 liter diesel. I was actually planning on getting a wrangler but im waiting to see how this truck comes out. My question is, is it smart to own a diesel vs a gasoline engine? I live in texas and gas right now is in the 3.60s and diesel is in the 3.70s. Would i be paying alot more for fuel with diesel or does the milage of diesel balance it all out?
I really dont mind the noise of diesels.
how much power does a 2.8 liter diesel give me?

    • ANSWER:
This is a personal choice as there are many variables to consider when getting a diesel.

Diesel engines are generally louder than gas engines.- you'll notice this immediately at a drive-thru
Diesel is not as readily available as gas- be preprared to carry extra if doing any road trips
Diesel can be much more expensive than gas- it's .15 more at one station here in California
If you accidentally put gas in a diesel tank you can do serious harm to the engine-not to mention a trip to the dealer- unlike if you put diesel in a gas tank, which requires little more than flushing it out.

Diesel engines generally last long- 200k miles or more.
Diesel engines have a lot more torque
Newer diesel engines are clean and some allow for biofuel (vegetable oil) to be mixed if wanted.
Diesel engines are more fuel efficient than gas

I'd get a diesel if the price is right like 2k more but any more than that your losing money.

Toyota Tundra - The Good Pick Up Vehicle

The Toyota Tundra was a full-size pickup truck launched in the market for at the first try around 2000.

Even with some quality troubles, the pickup truck of Toyota was still rated higher than other American competition.

Inside the rivalry with those rivals for instance Ford or GM, Toyota made a decision to introduce the full-size pick up truck Toyota Tundra. Because Ford and GM are the large rival who have gained a large of market share, the Toyota Tundra have to have the superior lineaments to generally be prevailed.

The advantage of Toyota tundra focuses on the pros of America vehicle such as impressive disposition and big sizes. Consequently, Toyota Tundra is one of the most important industrial car available in the market section. To do this result, Toyota has invested billions in technique finding and factory investment in San Antonio.

Three types of Tundra engines are one V6 and two V8. The greatest ones is V8 which has superior manufacturing technology and highly compatible with the task of carrying half a ton. More over, the various options of Toyota are the three types of flooring, the wheelbase is three sizes and five types of cabins.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
is there any mid-engined pick-up truck in the world? if any, can someone give me a photo of it?

    • ANSWER:
Loads, I've always called them "builders trucks" but they are, to all intents and purposes, pickup trucks.

They are just the open buck versions of the little mid-engined vans. They are quite popular in the UK and europe.

  2. QUESTION:
What would be a good FILM camera to carry around to capture shots of opportunity?
I want quality 35 mm photos, yet essentially not requiring photographic knowledge. I ask this question because yesterday I pulled behind an old, restored pick up truck. The driver was a young guy with a white t-shirt, and his dog sat on the passenger's
side with his head resting on the rear seat and looking out the rear window. It would have been such a great shot. If only I had a quality camera that I could just pick up and snap the picture.
    Any suggestions, please.

    • ANSWER:
If it's a quality FILM camera you're after, then I suspect that you're looking for the superior image detail films give over and above digital cameras. My first suggestion is that you go out of your way and learn a little about cameras from an old, old black and white film "How to..." book on photography. You will be most thankful that you did!

Then, I'd suggest that you go to www.com and get the Nikon N80. Now, this camera has auto-focus, and it can be set to work pretty much like a point and shoot camera ("P" Mode) and all you do is look through the viewfinder, compose your image as you press the shutter button halfway down and the camera will focus for you (as long as you have auto-focus lenses), it will set the correct aperture and shutter speed; to take the photo, press the button all the way down. The camera will advance the film and rewind it once the last photo is taken on the roll of film. It is a no-nonsense camera that is ergonomically built. It feels great in your hands. You can use this camera totally manual where you set the aperture and shutter speed and you can focus manually or let the camera focus for you. It also has the advantage of 3 metering systems: average metering (also known as center-weighted metering), spot metering and matrix metering.

Insofar as the lens, I will recommend that you get the most popular and versatile lens made by Nikon, the Nikkor AF 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6D Macro lens. You can use this lens as a wide angle lens, a regular lens, a portrait lens, a short telephoto lens and as a macro lens! Alternatively, there's the less expensive but equally as good lens by Nikon, the Nikkor AF 35-105mm f/3.5-5.6D Macro lens (make sure it says "macro" on it... there's another older version that is not a macro lens). Either of those two lenses will satisfy your needs BUT I would also suggest that you get yet another lens, the 50mm f/1.8D lens for when you find yourself in low-lighting situations. Afterward, when you're comfortable with the camera and the lenses, you can also opt to get the Nikkor AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6D lens; this is a fun lens!

Check out www.keh.com and be ready to buy immediately upon seeing what you want... those cameras and lenses don't last long on their shelves! You will save more than a few dollars and you will get great quality equipment here. They reputable and reliable, too. By all means, buy the Instructions Manual... it will make life a whole lot easier for you!

      Good luck.

  3. QUESTION:
Any lawyers that can help? A car backed up into mine and said i rear ended them?
How do I prove I did not rear-end a vehicle?
About 3 months ago I was involved in an accident with a Waste Resources Truck (Trash Pick-up). The WR vehicle reversed into my S-10 pick-up truck at 1-5mph at a red light. Two men came out of the vehicle and I asked them what we were supposed to do and they said "we can just leave it" So I was like hell no (not out loud) and I called my dad. He said to call the police before they try and take advantage of me (cause I was 18 at the time and have never been into an accident) The officer came and they quickly said that i rear ended them. The officer didn't buy it and wrote up the police report. They then listened to the officer and admitted to their fault. The officer gave me his card to make sure everything goes right. I then later called their boss and he started giving me an attitude saying that his employees in the car said I rear ended them. So I called the police station and they told me to calm down and come pick up the police report and i should be fine. So I then picked up the police report and sent it to their insurance company. They sent a letter back saying since their insured says it was my fault they would not pay. So now I am even more pissed and I'm taking it to small claims court. I have photos of the accident on the day of, the police report, and I am about to talk to the police officer tomorrow. I just hope he remembers the accident. And my insurance agent said that if i did rear-end them, my car would have dipped downwards while breaking and scratch and dent the hood at the top. Which has no scratches or dents on it.

So I just want to know if there is any other way I can prove I did not rear-end them, and the company might be a city government owned company. But with the evidence I have, can I win?

    • ANSWER:
If you have collision coverage, you can let your insurance company pay for the damage to your vehicle. The insurance company will then subrogate against the other vehicle to try and get paid back. That would be the easiest thing to do.

As far as the damage to your vehicle goes-- sometimes you can tell which version of the story is more true based on the damage to the vehicles. In a breaking situation, you usually see damage to the hood/grille/headlights. As far as the "top" of the hood goes-- I generally consider the "top" to be the area with the hinges and you don't usually see damage there from a breaking situation.

If you are taking it to small claims court- all you can do is present your side and see what a judge does with it. No one here can tell you if you will win or not. Every case (even the ones that seem like a "slam dunk") can go either way.

  4. QUESTION:
Can Someone From USA Please Confirm What This Pick Up Is Please...Desperate!!!?
This is a link to a site which I found this truck on.

I live in Australia and want to import the tub. Can anyone confirm or give me another site that will more photos of this truck?

    Thankyou

    LINK: http://www.mustangbodykit.info/kits/s10-blazer-body-kit/
Its the first black truck on the page.

    • ANSWER:
It is a heavily modified Chevy S10. It has been lowered and had a body kit added on it. Chevy used to manufacture the same look on this truck. It wasn't this drastic but it had the same style. They called it the Chevy S10 Extreme. Chevy stoped manufacturing this line just a few years ago. They were replaced with the Chevy Colorodo. They are a little bit bigger trucks. But I had an S10 for a few years. They are definately good little trucks.

  5. QUESTION:
alright folks what's up with this?
my ex left and i'm like ok if your done with this marriage OK. i'm not going to fight it if you don't want to be here. she told me what she wanted out of the house. I said OK to everything besides a few things and moved all her things into the garage for her to pick up. i understand she wants out and that's that. listen to this though when she picked up the stuff, she took the family picture, cut off my head out of the picture and stuck it to my pick up truck window when I returned after she moved her stuff. what's up with that? seems really immature and she left so what's the big deal. this was her choice. seems just freaky. i didn't do anything to her things. i moved them carefully into the garage so it would be easy for her to move on like what she wanted. what's up with the whole decapitation thing of my photo? it's a little frightening to tell you the truth.

    • ANSWER:
I think she just got mad because you didn't seem to upset that it was over and this really got to her .Maybe she expected you to put up a fight and beg her to stay .When you moved her stuff to the garage , it's a sure sign that your ready to move on . Ya Ticked her off and so she did a stupid childish thing and cut your head out picture .
