Diesel Tuning Comes Of Age - Efi Diesel

Modern diesel technology has come a long way since its invention by Rudolf Diesel at the end of the 19th century. Modern diesel engines have even further improved upon the advantages of lower fuel consumption and the potential for much higher power outputs. In fact, with the current price of petrol continuing to rise, the motoring industry predicts the market for diesel vehicles in Australia will increase greatly in the next 10 years.

Travellers are one group which have not been slow in taking advantage of the benefits of owning a diesel. Whether it be a diesel 4wd pulling a van or a diesel motor home, most will agree diesel has many advantages over petrol for long trips.

Once the van or motor home is fully loaded, however, a long haul can sometimes become frustrating as power and fuel consumption can be adversely effected by the increased weight. The simple solution to this can be to add a DPChip to your diesel engine. The DPChip simply plugs in after the ECU on any EFI diesel engine. This advanced device then intercepts the signals going from the computer to the engine and safely ‘fine tunes’ them to increase performance. Power and torque are instantly increased by up to 35% and because engine efficiency is increased this can lead to fuel economy improvements of between 5 – 10% depending on driving style.

One such vehicle to recently take advantage of the DPChip is the Mercedes Sprinter. The Sprinter 313CDI has a 2.2L 4cyl Common rail diesel engine with an auto-controlled manual gearbox. This vehicle takes a DPChip ‘DP31’ which is installed in 5 minutes. The DPChip can be easily self installed or fitted at one of many nationwide distributors. Time taken from drop off to pick up is roughly 1 hour and this time includes fitting, road testing and making any adjustments necessary. Each DPChip comes preset to the vehicle and no adjustment is necessary however, they are able to be manually (and in some models via laptop) adjusted to suit individual vehicle setup and requirements.

The Mercedes Sprinter power output before fitting the DPChip was 95kW and 300Nm, after fitting this improved to 115kW and 351Nm. Upon road testing to improvement was clearly evident. Pre-DPChip the Sprinter went up Bendooley hill (South of Mittagong) in top gear and came back 1 gear going up. The speed was 90km/h at bottom and holding 72km/h at lowest. After installing the DPChip, on the same hill, in top gear there was no need to change back and 90km/h at bottom only dropped to 85km/h. This is roughly equivalent to 1 ½ gears better.
After driving the DPChipped Sprinter on a regular trip up through Port Macquarie and surrounding areas (Kempsey and through the mountains to Armidale and back (to Sydney) – a loop of approximately 1000km – the vehicle uses 12 to 17 litres less Diesel when the DPChip is plugged in. The improved power and torque lead to less gear changing which in turn can lead to improved fuel consumption. Next time you are travelling and have to change down going up a long hill, consider a DPChip. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the improved power and torque as well as the increased fuel efficiency this can lead to, all in all leading to a more comfortable and enjoyable trip.

DPChip is available for all EFI diesel cars, 4wds, light commercials, trucks, agricultural equipment, construction machinery and boats. With over 1200 applications supported and growing DPChip has the world’s largest range of EFI diesel power chips. 1. QUESTION:
Toyota landcruiser 80series stuck in 4wd?
So I have a Toyota 80 series 4wd Diesel wagon and it is stuck in 4WD. This is a selective 4wd vehicle and not full time 4WD. But it stays in 4H. And won't go back to 2H.

    Does anyone have any ideas???
Have already tried to reverse and try again. Unsuccessful.

The shifter goes into the transfer case and it doesn't seem to be binding up. All the tyre have even tread wear.

    Could it be the shifter????

exact length dipstick for 2005 gmc truck sierra 2500hd 4wd 6.6l turbo diesel?
what is the exact length dipstick for 2005 GMC truck sierra 2500hd 4wd 6.6l turbo diesel? I have a dipstick that I replaced but it is not long enough... this truck as you may know takes much oil than a normal vehicle... around 11 quarts instead of the normal 3 or 4 or whatever... anyway when I realized that the dipstick wasn't going to help me because it was the wrong size i worried that I may have put the wrong amount of oil in so I drained ALL of the oil and did it again and got as close to the 10.5 as I could... but I am still not satisfied because I am worried about hurting the truck without the exact amount of oil in it

Goto a garage and get a correct one ,cheaper than an engine,.

  3. QUESTION:
    Best gas mileage deisel vehicle?
My husband is able to get free diesel fuel where he works at. He won't be able to get it every shift, but for the most part he is allowed to. We are looking at getting a diesel vehicle (since gas prices are OUTRAGEOUS!) but we want one that gets good mileage. I heard something about an 04 VW Jetta (maybe?) that gets amazing diesel mileage and has 4 wheel drive? Do you know what vehicle that is, or any other 4WD Diesels with equivalent or better gas mileage?

    • ANSWER:
There are no AWD diesel cars in the United States, and there are no plans for one in the foreseeable future.

Also, diesel is more expensive (in the US) than gasoline. This is roughly made up by the increased energy efficiency of diesel engines, and the higher energy density of diesel fuel, but you won't be saving a lot of money by driving a diesel, especially considering the premium that diesels command. VW TDIs (the diesels) can sell for over MSRP...USED. Because there are people getting hysterical over fuel prices just like you.

Be warned, VW, including its diesels, are not known for reliability. That said, the VW TDIs are some of the most fuel-efficient vehicles available in the United States. They are front-wheel drive.

The only 4WD diesels in the US are pickup trucks, and I believe the Jeep Liberty. They DO get markedly better fuel economy than their gasoline-powered equivalents, but that just means they're in the 20s instead of the 10s.

AFAIK, the only other late-model diesel in the US is the Mercedes E-class. BMW is supposed to be introducing some diesels into the US market soon (I think the 5 series is supposed to be first...that is supposed to get around 37 mpg highway, in a 2 ton car), and Honda has made some noise about bringing their diesels over. (Those would be the ones you REALLY want, when they finally do come here.)

Your other option is to go for the 1980s diesels. VWs are the most common, but Toyota and Nissan also made small, fuel-efficient diesels. Nissan had a diesel Maxima (small by today's standards) and Toyota had a diesel pickup that did over 40 mpg, and I believe I recall hearing something about a diesel Corolla once (though that may have been custom).

  5. QUESTION:
Recommend an economic SUV/4WD/AWD that has a decent reputation off road?
Hi looking at getting a SUV/4WD/AWD and just after some feedback and advice
I am after a car that can go off road and handle conditions when going camping or outside suburbia.
Yet as a majority of its use will within the city I need something that is economic in the way of fuel.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks to me the best way to achieve the economic requirements I have is to look at a vehicle that runs on diesel.

I come across the VW Tiguan TDI, very nice but told VW does not have the best reputation for reliability.
The Subaru Forester range looks great but is only available with Petrol (However a diesel version I hear is coming out in June this year)

The Renault Koleos I hear is good back just does not meet the standards of othe SUVs
