Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How to sell your junk car for the highest price?
I heard there is a low income program that help you if you sell your junk car in california. It's not the rebate program, but it's some new program where if you're low income and you sell your junk car to the junk yard, you will get around 1k-1.5k. My car is a 1996 camry, it's still running, but it's not drivable since all the air bag pop, and the front compartment doesn't look right. If there is no such program, what is the best way to get rid of it for the highest price!

    • ANSWER:
      Not true.

  2. QUESTION:
How to make a junk car from household items?
I need to make a junk box car for science tomorrow, but I have no idea how to build it.The problem is that we can't use already made wheels and the car has to be powered by 1-2 rubberbands(not using them as sling shots).Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
Take two pieces of stiff cardboard, scotch tape, two pencils, a rubber band, and scissors. Cut a rectangle from one piece of cardboard. Use the other to make 4 wheels. Cut the rubber band so it is no longer a loop, and tape one end securely to the middle of one pencil. Tape the other end securely to the middle of one end of the rectangle (you could also use a stapler). Attach the pencils to either end of the rectangle by overlapping two pieces of tape so that the ends stick to the rectangle, but not to the pencils. Make sure the pencils are attached to the top of the rectangle, not the ends. Poke holes in the wheels and put them over the ends of the pencils. To run it, wind back the axle attached to the rubber band and release the car. Voila, rubber band car!

  3. QUESTION:
How to get rid of a Junk car?
I am in California and not sure of the laws here. I purchased a car in 92, paid it off a few years later and now it’s been sitting around in my garage for the past 4 years because I can no longer drive due to illness. I would like to junk it or at least get it out of my garage. NONE of the paperwork is up to date, and it was recently broken into, so what I did have is now lost. I did keep in my home the sales info from the dealer so I do have proof its mine. I really can’t spend the $$ from the DMV to get everything up to date just so I can junk it..... Should I dig a really big hole in my backyard or is there a way to get this thing out of my hair?
    - Charity will not take unless i get the paperwork from the DMV

    • ANSWER:

What to do when the car dealer do not take responsibility after selling junk car?
After four days that I bought a used car at Tyson in Shorewood, IL, the engine of this car failed.
I try to negotiate with the person that sold this car and with general sales manager of the store Jim Kinney, but they were very unhelpful and disrespectful. They did not want to take any responsibility even that I drove this car only 60 miles. This is a very ripped of . Are car dealers allowed to sell junk cars?
    What I should do?

    • ANSWER:
You made the purchase, you made the decision that the car was running fine, and you are the responsible party, not the dealer. If the car engine failed after only 60miles of driving, it had serious issues, when you took possession. There is no one to blame, but yourself. Next time you car shop, take someone with you that has knowledge about cars and car buying.

I heard about this from a family member but I haven't really been able to find anything on Google. Apparently you give up your junk car and get cash for it. Does anyone have any information?

    • ANSWER:
The House just passed the legislation this morning. It now goes to the Senate. President Obama is expected to sign it.

      money.cnn.com/2009/06/09/news/economy/cash_for_clunkers/index.htm

Vehicles eligible for trade-in must get less than 18 MPG in mixed driving. They would use the EPA estimates, which you can find on most models here:

      www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm

In addition, they must have been insured within the past 12 months, and cannot be older than 25 years. You can get 00 to trade in your guzzler on a vehicle that gets at least 4 MPG better mileage. You get 00 for trading in on a vehicle that gets at least 10 MPG more.

Presuming the Senate doesn't modify the bill significantly, this is a good deal for consumers. For example, if you trade in a 10-year-old GMC Sierra Minivan, which according to the EPA gets around 15 MPG, on a new Honda Odyssey that gets 20 MPG, you'll get a 00 voucher that's worth about twice the trade-in value of the older van. Choose a smaller vehicle, like a Civic, and you can get a 00 voucher. The new car dealer would apply the coupon to your trade in, effectively making a car that's worth about 00 by itself worth up to 00 towards a new vehicle.
