How Do Suv Rollover Accidents Happen?

The Ford Bronco and Ford E-series are just two of major SUV brands who received negative publicity for rollover accidents.

The cause of Ford rollover accidents is no different from what causes other brands such as Suzuki Samurai, Jeep CJ, Isuzu Trooper and Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero to rollover. All Sports Utility Vehicles have in common a high center of gravity.

Unlike a regular passenger car, an SUVs suspension is raised higher to accommodate the vehicles four-wheel drive, which in turn raises the vehicles center of gravity.

A higher center of gravity makes a vehicle more likely to tip over after impact.

Another factor that contributes to SUV rollover accidents is the track width or the distance between the right and left wheel.

A vehicle with a narrow track width is more likely to rollover during sudden and sharp turns compared to vehicles with a wider track width.

Some SUV manufacturers tried to solve the problem by reducing the steering capacity of some models. However, this also backfired as parking and negotiating a turn on sharp curves became difficult.

The last factor that is usually present in an SUV rollover accident is speed.

As with any other forms of vehicle, the higher the speed, the more difficult it is to control.
Combine that with a high center of gravity and a narrow width length and you may have a rollover accident brewing.

However, an SUV rollover accident does not just happen because of the presence of these factors.

A rollover accident is usually stimulated by any of the three mechanisms. They are:

Excessive cornering There are three forces that acts when a vehicle rounds a corner. First, the tire pushes the vehicle towards the center of the curve. Second, the force of inertia or the vehicles tendency to resist acceleration pushes the vehicles center of mass towards the opposite direction the vehicle is turning. Third, the mass of the vehicle pushes down on the vehicles center of gravity to prevent rolling over. When the forces exerted by the tire and inertia are enough to overcome the force exerted by the weight of the vehicle then that is when the vehicle rolls over. This usually happens when a vehicle is negotiating a sharp curve on high speed.

Tripping The physics involved is similar to excessive cornering. This occurs when an SUV is sliding sideways and the tires strike a curb, dig into soft ground or other circumstances that causes a sudden lateral force.

Collision This occurs when an SUV collides with another vehicle or object, which causes the vehicle to be unstable. An example would be when a narrow object causes one side of the vehicle to move upwards but not the other side, or when a side impact causes a vehicle to accelerate sideways.

SUV rollover accidents can be devastating and usually causes catastrophic injuries like head and spinal injuries.

So if you are involved in an SUV rollover accident, make sure that you get yourself treated and seek assistance from a rollover accident lawyer to know your legal options.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:
No, it's just they are to moms what minivans were 20 years ago and station wagons 20 years before that. Now the popularity is transitioning to CUVs. And SUVs have always been big so I'm not sure of the point you're trying to make.

  3. QUESTION:
What is the difference between a crossover and an SUV built on a car frame?
I called the Acura dealer about the Acura RDX, and they said that the RDX is a crossover, and it is built on a car frame. I also called the Volvo dealer about the Volvo XC-90, and they said that it is built on a car frame, but it is an SUV (not a crossover). I always thought that an SUV is built on a truck frame, and any vehicle that resembles an SUV built on a car frame is a crossover. How is it that the Volvo XC-90 is still classified as an SUV even though it is built on a car frame? What other criteria are there for a vehicle to be classified as a crossover besides being an SUV-resembling vehicle built on a car frame?

    • ANSWER:
The SUV segment is comprised of two types of vehicles - the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and the Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV-CVT-or just Crossover). There are over forty SUVs and almost thirty Crossovers that make up this segment. When PIN reported that SUVs were on the long tooth side of the dealers lot they were being kind to SUVs.

SUVs have actually been on the dealers lot for almost ninety days - that’s over two years in dog years and when a vehicle has been on a dealers lot that long it is no longer man’s best friend.

Crossovers are taking up the slack for SUVs by selling in 59 days. While SUVs make up 27 percent of the automotive industry, crossovers make up 40 percent of that market and ten percent of the total automotive industry. What is a crossover?

      Depending on the type of vehicle you drive, a crossover can look like a station wagon or an SUV. While considered a station wagon by many, Subaru is a car base platform that is known as one of the original crossovers. If you’ve been in a sedan, a Subaru will look like an SUV. If you’re coming out of an SUV, a Subaru looks like a station wagon. The most common attributes of a crossover are;

Crossovers are usually front wheel drive
Crossovers usually have a lower center of gravity
Crossovers typically have less towing capacity
Crossovers get better miles per gallon (mpg)than SUVs
Crossovers can have a better resale value than an SUV

  4. QUESTION:
Would you suggest a SUV or minivan for family of 3 with dog?
We are a family of 3 (2 adults; one infant) plus a large black lab. We have a subaru outback as our main car but are looking at getting a SUV or minivan for our 2nd car. We want to be able to travel with our dog plus have room for bags/cargo; plus we are planning on having more children. Would you recommend an SUV (Highlander, Pilot, Tahoe) or a Minivan (Sienna, Odyssey, Sedona)? Other recommendations welcome.

    • ANSWER:
I like a minivan better just because of the doors. It is so much easier to push a button and have the doors open. The size of the door is also nicer. Try out a few and see which you like better.

  5. QUESTION:
What is the best suv for hauling a two horse trailer?
I am looking to buy an suv that I will mostly use for running around town but will occasionally haul a two or three horse bumber pull with...... What is the best SUV for this?

    • ANSWER:
Before you even consider buying an SUV find out how much the GVWR, (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is. or the manufacturers recommended capacity of the trailer including the weight of the trailer itself and any thing being hauled in it. Thats the best way to find the best SUV/TRUCK to haul your horse trailer. Every manufacturer publishes a vehicle tow guide that can be obtained at any dealership. See that information before you buy your SUV/Truck. I prefer you go to Chevy/GMC, Ford, and Dodge dealerships to compare all the maximum load weight they can carry from all the SUV/Trucks.
The SUV/Trucks I think can carry super heavy loads are those new powerful 2011 Chevy Silverado HD trucks that can haul over 20,000lb!!!

If you just want an SUV, go with a 05-08 Dodge Durango. It has max towing of 8850lb's. or a 05-10 Ford Expedition, and/or 07-10 Chevy Tahoe, choose wisely.
